Odum was the recipient of the highest honors in ecology?the Tyler Award (world prize for environmental achievement ), the Prix de l'Institut de la Vie (awarded by the French government ), and the Crafoord Prize (the ecology equivalent of the Nobel Prize ) the latter two awards were shared with his brother, Howard T. He published a dozen books and more than 200 publications before his death on 10 August 2002. In 1970, he was elected to the National Academy of Sciences. He served as president of the Ecological Society of America (1964-1965) and received the Eminent Ecologist Award from ESA in 1974. Odum was also the founder of the Sapelo Marine Biological Laboratory and the Institute of Ecology.
